Internet of Things data will boost storage

Tired of big data stories? Unfortunately, they’re not likely to stop anytime soon, especially from vendors hoping to re-ignite your Capex spending. But there is some great truth to the growing data explosion, and it pays to consider how that will likely cause incredible changes to our nice, safe, well-understood current storage offerings. For some it might feel like watching a train wreck unfolding in slow motion, but for others it just might be an exciting big wave to surf on. Either way, one of the biggest contributions to data growth will come from the so-called Internet of Things.

Basically, the Internet of Things just means that clever new data sensors (and, in many cases, remote controls) will be added to more and more devices that we interact with every day, turning almost everything we touch into data sources. The prime example is probably your smartphone, which is capable of reporting your location, orientation, usage, movement, and even social and behavioral patterns. If you’re engineering-minded, you can order a cheap Raspberry Pi computer and instrument any given object in your house today, from metering active energy devices to tracking passive items for security to monitoring environmental conditions. You can capture your goldfish’s swimming activity or count how many times someone opened the refrigerator door before dinner.

One challenge is that this highly measured world will create data at an astonishing rate, even if not all the data is or ever will be interesting or valuable. We might resist this in our own homes, but the Internet of Things trend breached the data center walls long ago. Most active IT components and devices have some built-in instrumentation and logging already, and we’ll see additional sensors added to the rest of our gear. Naturally, if there are instrumented IT components and devices, someone (probably us) will want to collect and keep the data around for eventual analysis, just in case.

Adding to the potential data overload, there’s an emerging big data science principle that says the more data history one has the better. Since we don’t necessarily know today all the questions we might want to ask of our data in the future, it’s best to retain all the detailed history perpetually. That way we always have the flexibility to answer any new questions we might ever think of, and as a bonus gain visibility over an ever-larger data set as time goes by…

What the Internet of Things offers is this huge opportunity to build intelligent applications that can actively optimize and direct just about any system that is dynamically programmable. Here are the five types of things that are soon likely to be “sensorized” in your IT shop.

With the incredible rise in the number of mobile devices we can also see the advent of the Internet Of Things. Every device, mobile or otherwise, that has some ability to generate an interesting stream of data is getting “sensorized” and connected. The resulting streams of big data provide a wild new frontier for intelligence mining. We at Taneja Group see this trend opening up huge opportunities to build intelligent applications that can actively optimize and direct just about any system that is dynamically programmable.

Creating intelligent feedback and control loops has always been an engineering goal, whether it’s controlling home automation, a fleet of airplane engines, or your next IT “software-defined” data center. It all starts with getting all the devices that have a story to tell to stream back their location, connectivity, performance, capacity, health, usage, errors, and configurations dynamically. Now, some food for thought: Here are the five types of things that are soon likely to be “sensorized” in your IT shop.

  • TAKE 1 – User computing devices
    Laptops, tablets, and smart phones already generate large streams of interesting data, but printers, monitors, desktops, spare batteries, and even peripherals (e.g. do know where all your USB sticks are right now?) could get detailed sensors. Maybe even the break room coffee machine.
  • TAKE 2 – Each infrastructure box or “appliance”
    We get reams of data from the logical “application” side of systems today, but knowing where the physical boxes are racked or stacked, how each is experiencing temperature, getting jostled or vibrated, and using power will all get correlated with how each is delivering on its performance, capacity, and resiliency service requirements.
  • TAKE 3 – Cards, modules, and components

Mining the Data Your Clients Produce: Glassbeam SCALAR Lights Up Value

This week Glassbeam announced a new solution for vendors whose products in the hands of clients produce mountains of potentially valuable “back-end” data. Mining that data which can include streams of ongoing customer site configurations, usage, status, location or really any relevant sensor results can help drive vastly better customer support and satisfaction, new and timely revenue opportunities, and better informed product management decisions.  It might seem straightforward to extract value out of big data once you have it, but trying to “home grow” processing and coherent analysis of PB’s of “multi-structured” files to feed all those business processes by using IT logfile utilities or low-level Hadoop coding could take a big effort and fall far short of spectacular.
